Back-to-School Insurance Tips: What Parents and Students Should Know

As college students head back to campus, insurance might not be the first thing on their mind—but it should be on yours. Whether your child is living in a dorm, moving into an off-campus apartment, or heading off with (or without) a car, it’s a smart time to review your insurance coverage.

Here are three key insurance considerations to keep in mind this back-to-school season:

🏠 1. Renters Insurance for Off-Campus Housing

If your student is renting an apartment or house off-campus, they’ll need their own renters insurance policy. Unlike dorm living—where your homeowners policy may offer limited protection—off-campus housing is typically not covered under your policy.

Renters insurance is affordable and protects against:
  • Theft (laptops, electronics, bikes, etc.)
  • Fire and smoke damage
  • Water damage (from broken pipes, etc.)
  • Liability if someone gets injured in their space
Don’t assume the landlord’s insurance covers your student’s belongings—it doesn’t.

🎓 2. Good Student Discount

Is your student a strong academic performer? If they maintain a B average or better, they may qualify for a good student discount on your auto insurance policy.

This discount can save up to 10–20% depending on the carrier, and it’s available to full-time students under a certain age (typically 25). You’ll usually need to provide proof of GPA, class rank, or placement on the Dean’s List.

It pays—literally—to hit the books!

🚗 3. Distant Driver Discount

If your student is going away to school without a car, you may be eligible for a distant driver discount on your auto policy. Most carriers offer this if the student:
  • Attends school more than 100 miles away
  • Is not bringing a vehicle with them
  • Is still listed as a driver on your policy
This discount reflects the reduced risk since they won’t be driving regularly—and it can help keep your premiums down.

✅ Check In Before They Check Out

Before your student hits the road or unpacks in their new place, take a moment to review your insurance. A quick policy check-in can save you money and help protect against costly surprises.
